RPZ Backflow Preventers - Reduced Pressure Assemblies

RPZ Backflow Preventers & Reduced Pressure Assemblies

Shop RPZ backflow preventers and reduced pressure principle assemblies for commercial plumbing, irrigation, mechanical systems and cross-connection-control applications. MasterBuilder Mercantile carries reduced pressure backflow assemblies from leading manufacturers including Zurn Wilkins, Watts, Apollo and BEECO, with a range of connection sizes, materials and configurations available.

Reduced pressure assemblies—commonly referred to as RP, RPZ or reduced pressure zone backflow preventers—are designed to protect potable water supplies against backflow caused by both backsiphonage and backpressure in applications where reduced pressure protection is required.

Our selection includes RPZ assemblies from established backflow prevention manufacturers for commercial, industrial, irrigation and mechanical applications. Browse available models from Zurn Wilkins, Watts, Apollo and BEECO, and use the manufacturer model or part number whenever possible to identify the appropriate assembly.

Popular Zurn Wilkins options include the 975XL and 975XL2 Series, which provide compact reduced pressure backflow protection in a range of connection sizes and configurations.

For 1-inch applications, view the Zurn Wilkins 1-975XL 1" RPZ backflow preventer, a compact bronze reduced pressure principle assembly with 1" female NPT connections, full-port ball valves and convenient in-line service access.

How Does an RPZ Backflow Preventer Work?

An RPZ backflow preventer uses two independently acting check valves together with a differential relief valve. These components create a reduced pressure zone between the check valves and help maintain separation between the potable water supply and the downstream system.

If abnormal pressure conditions occur within the assembly, the relief valve can discharge water from the reduced pressure zone. This operating principle provides protection against both backsiphonage and backpressure when the assembly is properly selected, installed and maintained.

Commercial & Irrigation RPZ Assemblies

Reduced pressure backflow preventers are used across commercial plumbing, irrigation, mechanical equipment, industrial water systems and other applications requiring protection against backflow.

Available configurations vary by manufacturer and model and may include bronze or larger commercial assemblies, multiple connection types and a range of nominal valve sizes. Always review the individual product specifications before selecting an assembly.

Choosing the Right RPZ Backflow Preventer

When selecting an RPZ assembly, consider the connection size, connection type, required flow rate, working pressure, temperature, installation orientation and applicable approvals. The appropriate backflow prevention device depends on the application and the requirements of the authority having jurisdiction.

RPZ assemblies and double check valve assemblies provide different levels of backflow protection and are not interchangeable for every application. Where a double check assembly is appropriate, browse our double check valve assemblies.

RPZ Backflow Preventer Testing & Maintenance

Testable backflow prevention assemblies may require commissioning and periodic testing according to local cross-connection-control requirements. Routine inspection and testing help verify the operation of the check valves, relief valve and other components within the assembly.
